Feeling dismissed by your healthcare provider is an experience shared by countless women, especially when discussing sensitive topics like libido, weight gain, or night sweats. Historically, the medical establishment has often gaslighted female patients, leading to significant delays in treatment for conditions like perimenopause.
Knowledge is Power
If you feel unheard, specific data backs up your frustration. Studies indicate that women from ethnic minority backgrounds are significantly less likely to receive HRT prescriptions. Black women, for instance, are roughly 50% less likely to be prescribed hormone replacement therapy compared to white women, and 21% less likely to receive any prescription treatment for their menopause symptoms.
How to Speak Up
If you know something is wrong, don't stay silent. Here is a script to use at your next appointment:
Be Specific: Instead of "I feel off," use data. "I have tracked 15 hot flashes this week, and I wake up for 45 minutes every night at 3 AM."
Name the Condition: "I believe I am in perimenopause based on my irregular cycles and changes in my cholesterol."
Ask Directly: "Could we discuss HRT or a referral to a compounding specialist? I have read that personalized dosing can help with my mood and sleep."
If your provider dismisses you, say, "I understand you don't think this is necessary. Please note in my chart that I requested to explore hormone therapy options."
At Revolution RX, we ensure you receive medicine that fits your body.
